Imagine what it would be like driving behind a string of traffic during or after a downpour. Without the assistance of your windshield washer system, it would be almost impossible to see where you were going. The result might be a collision or pulling off the road and into the nearest service station to have the washer reservoir refilled.
You may be wondering why simply filling the reservoir with water from the tap is just as good. Well, wonder no longer.
While water can help clear the windshield in a pinch, it is not recommended that you rely on water alone to keep the washer system full. Water is not well suited to clearing road oil from the windshield and it will easily freeze when temperatures drop. On the other hand, washer fluid is specially formulated to do all that and more.
