Buying a car can be an exciting time, but there are some steps that you need to take to help ensure you get the car that fits your needs. One of those things is the test drive. No matter where you are purchasing the car from, there are some things you should do to help prepare you for the drive. These include:

  • Make a list of two or three cars you want to test drive that are suited to your needs and within your budget.
  • Schedule your test drive. Ideally you want to test drive the cars back-to-back so you can make an accurate comparison while it's fresh in your mind.
  • Examine the exterior of the car. Turn the car on and check the head and taillights, turn signals, paint color, and any odd noises.
  • Once inside, check out the interior features. Test the steering wheel, interior lights, electric windows, and windshield wipers to name a few.
  • While on the road take note of any engine noises, brakes, power train, or cabin noise. Also check out how smooth the ride is.

If you find any issues with the vehicle you want most that doesn't mean you can't get it. You may be able to negotiate the cost of repairs with the seller.
